Acupuncture May Improve Strength Performance

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study involving 33 recreational athletes (average age: 25 years; 20 men, 13 women), treatment with acupuncture was found to significantly improve strength performance, as compared to placebo laser acupuncture (a deactivated laser device). Subjects received either a) real acupuncture; b) placebo laser acupuncture; c) sham acupuncture (needling at non-acupuncture points). Immediate changes in maximum rebound height and quadriceps maximum isometric voluntary force (MIVF) associated with bipedal drop jumps, surface EMG activity of the rectus femoris muscle during 30 second sustained MIVF of knee extensors, and muscular endurance were assessed. Results found that immediately following real acupuncture the mean change in MIVF from baseline was 46.6 N, as compared to sham laser acupuncture (19.6 N) and sham acupuncture (28.8 N). The authors conclude, "The present study shows that a single acupuncture treatment was efficacious for improving isometric quadriceps strength in recreational athletes. These results might have implications not only for athletic performance enhancement, but also for rehabilitation programs aimed at restoring neuromuscular function."

CHIROPRACTIC

Performed at MWA by Michael Steinhauser, D.C. & Martin Gallagher, M.D., D.C.

 INJURY

Soft Tissue Therapy, Inflammation, Adhesions

This is a review of a progressive technique for the improvement of soft tissue injury relating to inflammatory processes occurring in the shoulders, elbows, knees and lower back. The premise of soft tissue injury is based on how the body responds to inflammation. When there is trauma or repeated micro-trauma, inflammation occurs. The body deals with the inflammation by fibrous healing. These fibrous adhesions or scar tissue are laid down in the muscle itself between the muscle groups and between the connective tissue wrappings and the muscle. As a result, the normal extension and contraction of the muscle is restricted. A loss of range of motion can occur with pain, decreased joint stability and decreased sports performance. This sets up conditions for reoccurrence of the injury. Standard physical therapy may reduce healing time by 50% using modalities such as ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation, whirlpools, hot and cold packs and therapeutic exercise. The fibrous adhesions remain after injury has healed. The involved area is weaker, less flexible and has a tendency towards re-injury. Chiropractic manipulation can enhance joint mobility, but does not address the soft tissue injury that initially placed the abnormal torque upon the joint. Soft tissue therapy is performed by treating all the muscles surrounding the involved joint with pressure and movement by the patient and the therapist to relieve adhesions. The technique utilizes the therapist's thumbs, fists and elbows as necessary, to each muscle surrounding the involved joint while the patient is actively moving the area. All ranges of motions are treated. Physical therapy and joint manipulation are used as adjuncts to soft tissue therapy. Soft tissue therapy is very specific and demands a complete understanding of the anatomy and the nature of the pathology of the injury. If the work is not properly done, the result can be disastrous, even by well-meaning individuals. The Soft Tissue Center has treated patients who have been previously treated by friends. Side effects can be neurologic damage, thrombus, embolism, hematoma, muscle tearing and further adhesions. People treated by this technique include champion powerlifter Steve Miller, American shotput record holder John Brenner, Pete Koch and Art Still of the Kansas City Chiefs, Calvin Sweeney and Rod Woodson of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee, bodybuilders Mike Christian, Charles Glass, Mike Quinn, Gary Strydom, Ric Valente and Jim Quinn.

 ALLERGY SEASON NATURAL HELP

It's that time of the year when ragweed and mold become more active in the environment. This can cause sinus problems, itchy eyes, asthma, skin rashes, and fatigue. To help cope with these foreign proteins, our patients often take Allergy Factors and Weed Mix homeopathic. Whenever possible use safe, non-drug approaches to your health!

Spring allergies affect an estimated 25 million Americans, and according to the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, we’re looking at one of the worst allergy seasons in a long time, thanks to climactic factors.

Airborne pollen is the most common cause of seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis.

Needless to say, sales of allergy medications of all kinds are booming. This includes antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays and allergy shots—many of which can cause significant side effects.

One of the better alternatives is sublingual allergy drops, which have been shown to work just as well as inhalers.

How and Why Do Allergies Develop?

Allergies are your body's reaction to allergens (particles your body considers foreign), a sign that your immune system is working overtime. The first time your body encounters an allergen, your plasma cells release IgE (immunoglobulin E), an antibody specific to that allergen. IgE attaches to the surface of your mast cells.

Mast cells are found in great numbers in your surface tissues (i.e., those with close proximity to the external environment, such as in your skin and in the mucous membranes of your nose), where they help mediate inflammatory responses. Mast cells release a number of important chemical mediators, one of which is histamine.

So, the second time your body encounters a particular allergen, within a few minutes, your mast cells become activated and release a powerful cocktail of histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins, which trigger the entire cascade of symptoms you associate with allergies: sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, hacking cough, itchy eyes, etc.

Histamine can cause your airways to constrict, like with asthma, or cause blood vessels to become more permeable, leading to fluid leakage or hives. Leukotrienes cause hypersecretion of mucus, which you commonly experience as a runny nose or increased phlegm.

Pollen is an extremely common mast cell activator, but other agents can trigger these processes as well. Mold spores, dust, airborne contaminants, dust mites, pet dander, cockroaches, environmental chemicals, cleaning products, personal care products and foods can all cause allergic reactions. Every person is different in what he or she reacts to. And, just because you haven't reacted to something in the past doesn't mean you won't react to it in the future—you can become sensitized at any point in time.

If you’re one of the tens of millions of allergy sufferers in the US, know there is plenty you can do besides lining the pockets of the pharmaceutical industry. Eating a wholesome diet based on unprocessed, ideally organic and/or locally grown foods, including fermented foods or taking probiotics, along with optimizing your vitamin D levels and correcting your omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, will form the foundation upon which your immune system can function in an optimal manner.

In the following sections, I’ll address a number of drug-free alternatives:

Chiropractic adjustments offer potentially great benefits for allergy sufferers. You can’t activate your immune system without a healthy nervous system. Published chiropractic research is confirming the clinical experience of many chiropractic physicians, namely that adjustments enhance immune function, promote drainage, and the natural healing response.

Allergy Factors, formulated by Dr. Martin Gallagher, M.D., D.C., is a synergistic blend of vitamins, plant extracts, minerals and herbal medicines that are designed to help alleviate the symptoms of allergies, including allergic rhinitis.

Grass & Weed Spray provides factors that mitigate hypersensitivity to grasses, weeds & pollens.

Vitamin D - Insufficient vitamin D levels have been linked to more severe asthma and allergies in children. Vitamin D has also been found to reduce allergic responses to mold.

Omega-3 Fats - I can't emphasize enough the importance of getting sufficient amounts of high-quality animal-based omega-3 fats in your diet. The fats DHA and EPA found in fish oil and krill oil are potent anti-inflammatories.

Mega Probiotic - In a 2008 study, researchers discovered that people who took probiotics throughout allergy season had lower levels of an antibody that triggered allergy symptoms. They also had higher levels of a different antibody (IgG), thought to play a protective role against allergic reactions. Other researchers found evidence that giving probiotics to newborns and mothers-to-be may help prevent childhood allergies.

Flushing your nasal cavity with a neti pot - Although several methods of nasal irrigation exist, one of the most popular is the Neti pot -- a ceramic or plastic pot that looks like a cross between a small teapot and Aladdin's magic lamp. Although nasal irrigation using the Neti pot has been around for centuries, its use is on the rise in the U.S. The Neti pot originally comes from the Ayurvedic/yoga medical tradition.

Acupuncture, a clinical study on the effects of manual acupuncture in patients with allergic asthma found that acupuncture treatment was found to exert regulatory effects on mucosal and cellular immunity. Acupuncture was performed 3x per week for 5 weeks. The needles were twisted approximately 360° evenly at the rate of 60 times/min for 20 seconds, manipulated every 10 minutes, and withdrawn after 30 minutes. Concentrations of sIgA and total IgA in secretions and levels of cortisol in the plasma were measured. Findings include decreased concentrations of sIgA and total IgA in the saliva, nasal secretions, levels of total IgE in sera, IL-2R + T lymphocytes and the absolute and differential numbers of eosinophils. The results of this study suggest that acupuncture exerts regulatory effects on mucosal and cellular immunity and therefore, patients with allergic asthma may benefit from treatment with acupuncture.

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) – is natural antihistamine, stinging nettle has a long history of use for seasonal allergies, without the drowsiness and dry mouth associated with many pharmacological antihistamines. Nettle inhibits your body’s ability to produce histamines.

Eating “right” – Follow a healthy diet, an estimated 80 percent of your immune system is actually located in your gut, so supporting your digestive health is essential to also supporting your immune system, which is your number one defense system against ALL disease.

CIRCULATION FACTORS

DESCRIPTION

Circulation Factors, exclusively from Medical Wellness Associates, is a natural oral chelating agent that improves circulation, lowers blood pressure, and strengthens the heart and muscles.

FUNCTIONS

Vitamin C is very beneficial in lowering blood pressure, lowering total cholesterol, strengthening collagen structures of the arteries, raising HDL cholesterol levels and inhibiting platelet aggregation. Vitamin B6 lowers blood pressure and helps to maintain the level of pyridoxal-5-phosphate levels in the blood. This decreases homocysteine levels, a causative factor of heart attacks.

Niacin is necessary in production of energy. It reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels. Magnesium is critical to many cellular functions, including energy production, protein formation and cell function. Potassium, an important electrolyte, is necessary for proper heart function; it maintains the electrical charge within a cell and is also essential to the conversion of blood sugar into glycogen, which is necessary for energy. It also helps to lower blood pressure.
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine is an important antioxidant useful in reducing stress. L-Taurine is an essential amino acid that is important to liver detoxification. It is also important to metabolism.

Hawthorne helps to dilate peripheral and coronary blood vessels because it is rich in flavonoids. It also helps to lower blood pressure, spasm of the arteries, and irregular heartbeats.

Gingko Biloba is useful in increasing blood flow to the brain as it inhibits red blood cell clumping; therefore, enhancing the fluidity of the blood for better circulation in the body. It is recommended for its numerous nutritional benefits for the brain and circulatory system.

Dandelion promotes health circulation, blood vessels cleanser, and strengthener. Bearberry is helpful for urinary tract infections. Horsetail provides silicon, which is important to bone calcification. It strengthens bones and connective tissues.

Dimethylglycine is an antioxidant involved in converting glycine to creatine, which is used by the muscle tissue and the central nervous system.

L-Carnitine is essential for breakdown of fats into energy. It also allows heart muscle to use oxygen more efficiently and aids in recovery from heart attacks.

Chondroitin Sulfate is a cartilage extract effective in treatment of osteoarthritis.

Coenzyme Q10 is used for treating cardiovascular disease such as congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, angina, mitral valve prolapsed, diabetes, immune deficiency, weight loss aid, muscular dystrophy, and as a performance enhancing agent in athletes.
